Ngoi Ngoi- (LIVE) Patea Maori Club

ngoi-and-albu_20220322-223345_1 WAIATA O TE RA - SONG OF THE DAY

The waiata for today is a oldie but a goodie. Hoping this beautiful waiata inspires you to be like Ngoi and follow your heart, smash your dreams, serve your people, be humble and awesome!

I am a product of Kohanga Reo and Kura Kaupapa Māori, not just that but i was brought up with my nannys at Taniwha Marae. I was taught the hearty Kingitanga ways when Te Ataairangikaahu Te Ariki Tapairu was here with us. Being born in 1981 i was a part of all the humble beginnings of Maoridom, when the likes of Ngoi Pewhairangi, Tuini Ngawai, Dalvanius, just to name a few, were at the peak of their singing careers. Their contribution to the music industry was imperative to my growing up and having te reo Māori normalized.

This waiata in particular reminds me of my obligation to the survival of te reo Māori. Who would of thought it was only a short 50 years ago when the language specialist said te reo Māori would die. Well in your face! Te reo Māori me ona tikanga is alive and thriving in Kohanga reo, Kura Kaupapa Maori, even mainstream schools not to mention the many marae and communities also.

If you want to learn more about te reo come and join us here SOON on a new Learn Te Reo Māori platform dedicated to MLI, till then, kia tau nga manaakitanga o te runga rawa ki a koutou katoa.

Arohanui ana, Whaea Kiriana
